A Pair of Vintage Clam Chairs, by Arnold Madsen for Vik & Blindheim, Norway 1953

The iconic Clam Chair traces its origins back to 1944, when Danish upholsterer Arnold Madsen created the design in Copenhagen. A year later, Madsen partnered with cabinetmaker Henry Schubell to establish the furniture company Madsen & Schubell, dedicated to crafting this distinctive piece. Known in Danish as the ‘Muslingstol’—or Clam Chair—it quickly gained recognition for its elegant shape, inspired by the natural form of an open clam shell. In 1953, Madsen & Schubell granted exclusive production rights to the Norwegian company Vik & Blindheim, marking a new chapter in the chair’s history.
